First-round finish for P.A’s Rohovich

Prince Albert’s own Ryan Rohovich secured his fourth professional mixed martial arts win just a minute and 40 seconds into the opening round.

Rohovich, 30, improved his record to 4-3 with the quick victory over Josh Goodheart (2-2), from Brandon, Man. in the lightweight division at a Modern Fighting Championship event in Saskatoon Feb. 23.

Goodheart seemed to have the early advantage when he caught a body kick thrown by Rohovich and turned it into a takedown moments into the first round. The P.A. fighter turned it around quickly, however, and managed to get on top of Goodheart.

Rohovich mixed effective strikes while moving into half-guard, then mounted his opponent and rained punches onto Goodheart until the fighter from Manitoba tapped out.

The victorious fighter said it’s always a good feeling stepping into a fight and coming away with a quick win.

“I’m just going to keep moving forward. I’m looking to fight again as soon as possible, get a couple more wins, and you’ll never know what will happen after that,” Rohovich said.

Saskatoon was the closest to home Rohovich had ever fought. A contingent of fans and family made the trip to cheer for the fighter, including his daughter who had never seen him fight live before. He said it felt great to step into a ring with their support.

Rohovich was pleased to see the province jump on board and support Mixed Martial Arts, as a massive crowd assembled to watch the evenings card.

“[Mixed Martial Arts] is just going to keep growing in Saskatchewan,” Rohovich said. “This is the first event in Saskatoon and there’s going to be more events… and I expect more people at each and every event.”
