Security business locks up Legacy Award

From humble beginnings in the mid-1990s a Prince Albert business has become a leading light in the security game.

The Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce, together with the Samuel McLeod Business Awards Planning Committee, have announced Wayne Hansen as the recipient of the 2017 Legacy Award.

“I tell people when I first started my inventory could fit into an apple box,” Hansen told paNOW. “Now we have a huge room with about 450 square feet of inventory to serve our clients.”

It’s that sort of growth and dedication that makes Hansen and his team of 17 staff the perfect choice for an award that recognizes a long time business owner or family whose work has had a positive impact on the wider community. Prince Albert Alarm Systems was initially a local alarm monitoring company. It was a partnership between Hansen and his mentor and friend Barry Dutchak at Parkland Ambulance. They were based in the basement of that building. Now, with his business located at Second Avenue West, Hansen has clients far and wide.

“We now have one of the largest geographic serving areas probably in Canada for an alarm company to serve, from central Saskatchewan right up to Fond-du-Lac, Black Lake, La Loche and Creighton,” he said. “We travel six hours one way just to do an install or service calls.”

The company lists 20 First Nations, five school divisions, various retail outlets, cottages and farms among their client base, in addition to thousands of residential properties.

Technology has been a game changer according to Hansen with people driven to upgrade based on advancements, especially the smart phone.

“People can now see who comes into their property or who’s been on their premises and that’s really helped us to grow our business,” he said.

Hansen will be formally honoured at the annual Legacy Award brunch on March 22.
