Council approves lot rezoning for seniors’ complex and retail space

Meadow Lake could have a new seniors’ complex in the next couple of years.

Council gave the go-ahead for a vacant lot, located at 601 Second Ave. W., to be rezoned from residential to multi-use, as local developers Meadow Lake Properties would like to construct a 28-unit, four storey apartment building with six commercial spaces on the first floor.

The proposal was submitted for advertising and a public hearing was held at the council meeting on Monday, March 26. Citizens from the city, and in the areas adjacent to the proposed building were given an opportunity to respond to the project. There were none brought forward.

Al MacFarlane, owner of Meadow Lake Properties, attended the hearing. He said if the rezoning was approved, official plans would be firmed up and he would aim to start construction in spring 2019.

“It’s still my plan to work towards that,” he said.

Mayor Gary Vidal and council asked about how parking would work, since the building would house both retail spaces and residential. Currently the design allows for 28 underground parking spaces for residents only and 34 spaces outside which would be reserved for the commercial spots and tenants only.

The bylaw was passed unanimously by council, which also acts as a contract between the city and Meadow Lake Properties.

Vidal praised administration for their work on presenting the information.

“I just want to commend Jessica [Walters] and Diana [Burton],” he said. “If we got through this process with that little concern and discussion, we obviously did a good job on our homework for this.”
