A police investigation is underway after North West College reported a loss of $11,300 over a five -month span.

According to province wide news release from the Saskatchewan government this morning, the losses occurred between December 2016 and May 2017.

Interim CEO and President Melanie Roberts, said North West’s internal controls found cash deposits did not match.

“The college undertook a thorough investigation in full cooperation with the police,” Roberts said. “The matter is an active RCMP investigation so there isn’t much more I can say about the matter.”

Roberts added the college has strong policies and procedures in place for monitoring these things.

“We have made some refinement to our internal controls and implemented steps to further mitigate the risk of this happening again. We remain committed to safeguarding public funds,” she said.

Roberts said no students were affected by the missing funds and that this is the first time she’s seen something like this happen in her 18 years working with the college.

Due to the active investigation, Roberts wasn’t able to confirm if the money went missing on a specific campus or between the two in North Battleford and Meadow Lake.

She added more information on the next steps will be made available once police conclude the investigation.
