CJNS Meadow Lake DJ Matt Ryan turned his passion for country music into a career in radio, and recently found out he’s nominated for two Saskatchewan Country Music Awards (SCMAs).

This year, he’s up for On-Air Personality Award (Secondary Market) and Country Music Person of the Year. CJNB in North Battleford is a finalist for Radio Station of the Year in a secondary market.

He said it’s a huge honour to be a nominee among some leaders in the industry and a blessing to be acknowledged by peers he respects.

“Just to be mentioned in these categories with very deserving individuals is really a great thing, and very humbling to be a part of,” Ryan said. “It’s fantastic. So many people work so hard in Saskatchewan, there’s so much talent in our province. There’s a lot to be proud of and a lot to celebrate.”

Both awards acknowledge those who promote country music in the province. Ryan said it’s important to him both as a professional and a fan of the country music scene across Saskatchewan.

“It’s been a big passion of mine,” he said. “I’ve always absolutely loved doing that and hope to continue doing that for many more years, because I think it’s very important to support local artists, get out to the shows, buy their merchandise, buy their music and albums.”

The CJNS/CJNB radio personality has been working in the field since graduating from the Western Academy of Broadcasting in 2008, and has attended the SCMAs over the last seven years. He said he’s looking forward to this year’s event in Prince Albert from April 27 to 29.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Ryan said. “I can’t wait to see some really good friends, it’s kind of like a little family reunion, you get to see people you haven’t seen in a while.”
