Town opens waste transfer facility

Battleford residents will now be able to dispose of their garbage without having to cross the river to do it.

The Town of Battleford announced at its last meeting the new Loraas Environmental Services waste transfer station opened to the public on Tuesday.

The facility is located on the west side of Battleford, with an access point from 10th Street. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

As part of the process, Loraas will eventually transfer the contents from the site to a landfill in the RM of Wilton, located South of Marshall.

Prior to using the new waste transfer station facility the town hauled its garbage to the City of North Battleford’s landfill.

The town’s Mayor Ames Leslie there are a number of benefits to the town having its own waste management site right in the town.

“It gives the residents of the Town of Battleford the opportunity to take (garbage) closer, rather than taking it across the river to the far north-east side of the city,” he said.

He added it’s also more efficient for the town employees driving the waste pick-up trucks as they can collect rubbish from more homes more proficiently in a day.

He added residents can also take their garbage to the transfer station at a lower rate than what it would cost elsewhere.

“We’re going to see some savings there as well,” he added, citing a contract with Loraas which will provide the town with a competitive rate. “The residents will see savings yearly going forward. . . It will save the town money, from the operations side, the amount we pay to dispose of the waste that is picked up from each home.”

The new waste transfer station in the town will also have a recycling site.

City facility sees time change

The City of North Battleford has announced it changed the opening hours for its dump.

Previously, the site was open from May 1 to Oct. 31 from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., and Nov. 1 to April 30 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Now the site is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (no vehicle will be admitted past 5.45 p.m.), and is closed Sundays and satutory holidays.

Mayor Ryan Bater said the change was needed since there was very little business coming in during the last hour when the facility was open to 7 p.m. seasonally, so it made more sense to simply close it at 6 p.m. throughout the year instead.

As a note, the city is reporting on its website the facility will be closed from Saturday, May 19, to Monday May 21, for crews to complete maintenance work on the site’s scale.
