Community meeting set to discuss future of M.L. stampede grounds

Nearly 1,000 people had their say on a survey about Meadow Lake’s stampede grounds and grandstands, and next week, city officials are looking forward to getting even more feedback. A community open house will be held at the Civic Centre on Tuesday, April 17 at 7 p.m.

In late 2017, the city decided to temporarily close the area to public access due to safety concerns. The price tag for repairs in 2015 was over $36,000, and when the assessment was done last year, the estimate to bring only the grandstand seating area up to code was in excess of $115,000.

City manager Diana Burton said the results of the survey will be presented at the open house, along with a presentation on the history of the facility and possibilities for its future.

“Staff will also present some costs and options for replacement of the current grandstands,” she said. “There’s a whole facility of the stampede grounds there, and there’s some work that needs to be done in all aspects of the facility. Then there will be a moderated open mic portion where people present can come up and ask questions of city staff or of council.”

She said council’s main role at the meeting will be to listen to all the questions, comments and looking at the results from the survey.

“At the end of the day, council still has to weigh the community feedback they receive on this project with the financial resources that we have and all the other things that need to be done,” Burton said. “We invite everybody to come out to the event to have [their voices] heard.”

She said of the 908 respondents, a number were from the city, the rural municipality, Flying Dust First Nation, and some from outside of the city who were interested in the topic.

Burton added following the meeting, council will take all factors into account and likely make their decision on the matter in May or June.
