Fundraising quilt a celebration of community

A fundraising project by Meadow Lake’s Multiworks Corporation is really showing how close-knit Meadow Lake truly is.

Individuals, businesses, schools, and fellow community groups have been creating 10×10 inch squares over the last several weeks, and when the April 30 deadline rolls around, they will come together to create a quilt to be raffled off. The proceeds will raise money for Multiworks’ new building on Centre St., set to open later this year.

Louise Slater, program manager for the non-profit which supports adults with intellectual disabilities, said those participating are encouraged to share their individuality though their creations.

“Anybody can participate, and can submit what they thought of Meadow Lake, or whatever, really,” she said. “We have quite a few from the schools, some of the clubs, we’ve had a good response for sure. We thought in a way getting the community to make the blanket would be a nice way to give back to the community too.”

She said the level of engagement has been a true testament of how supportive Meadow Lakers are of positive causes.

“We’re excited about the response we’ve gotten so far,” Slater said. “We’re having local quilters put it together after it’s done, and we’re hoping it should be ready by the end of May.”

The new facility will house administrative offices, educational spaces, a new kitchen, space for musical and art equipment, and it will also have a garage for the Handi-van which is funded by the City of Meadow Lake. It will come equipped with accessible bathroom facilities for clients as well, something which was lacking at the current space on Sargent Ave. The clients of Multiworks will receive educational, employment, and life skills training at the new facility.
