The new Magic Lantern four-screen cinema planned for downtown North Battleford is almost here.
"The first shovel went into the ground today," Mayor Ryan Bater said following council Monday.
"This has been a couple of years in the works," he added. It's going to be a major addition to downtown and a significant anchor. It's going to bring people. It's going to bring consumers. It's going to add to the quality of life because of the entertainment offerings in this community. It's a very exciting project and I'm elated to see that it's begun."
He said now that the new build project is beginning, residents will no longer be able to access the gravel portion of the block, where the cinema construction is taking place.
The city is reminding residents that parking is available on the nearby side streets where people are permitted to park in accordance with the existing parking restrictions.
One lot at the site where the construction is taking place is being developed for the new cinema. The lot adjacent to it, to the west of the cinema site, will be used as a landing space for the heavy construction equipment required to build the movie theatre.
The landing space used for the equipment will eventually be turned into a parking lot for the new theatre after the cinema is built.
The cinema is expected to be completed within a year.
