City maps out streets targeted for paving, utility digs this summer

Some say we have two seasons in Canada, winter and construction, and city crews are about to embrace the latter.

Thirty-five locations are on the books for paving this summer and five others will undergo water and sewer replacements. It is part of the $4.1 million annual paving program the city introduced in 2013. Since then, over 47 kilometres of roadway has been replaced, just over 16 per cent of all roadways in Prince Albert.

The streets are not listed in any particular order and 48 hours notice is provided to those on any street prior to closure. This list does not include streets identified for patchwork paving this season. 

A number of factors are considered when piecing together a street paving list each year. Roadways are ranked on a scale of 0 to 100. In highly simplistic term, a score of zero indicates no road, 50 is a minimum passing grade and 100 denotates a newly constructed road. A road’s overall importance to traffic volumes and the condition of the water and sewer main underneath are also weighed into the ranking. A visual inspection is also completed after spring melt to identify any road damage that may have occurred over the winter.
