Filling a bus to help fill shelves and stomachs at the food bank

A city transit bus parked outside the Lake Country Co-op in Prince Albert took a brief break from carrying passengers to deliver some assistance to the Prince Albert Food Bank.

Hampers stuffed with food lined the seats for the facilities annual food drive Saturday, in association with 900 CKBI.

Taking a different approach to collections for the second year, the food bank hosted a Fill the Bus campaign, a shift over the door-to-door collection events of years past.

Canned goods and bulk essentials were a cool treat on a sweltering hot day for Operations Manager Kerry Ramsdell.

“We do feed a lot of people through the month — children or single families,” she said. “It is very important for people because they don’t always have the funds to support themselves. We try to help out as much as we can.”

She said the shelves at the bank were becoming quite bare, adding to the significance of the day.

She said bulk items, like pasta, rice, oatmeal or other items able to be portioned for the hampers are of utmost need.

This event is the kick-off to the Every Plate Full Summer Hunger Challange, as summer holidays can put additional financial pressure on many families.
