Police still searching for Sweetgrass Kennedy

Twenty days after the four-year-old boy was reported missing, police in Prince Albert are still searching the North Saskatchewan River for Sweetgrass Kennedy.

After conducting extensive interviews with witnesses, police said they concluded Kennedy was playing by the river with a group of children May 10 when he fell into the water and did not recover. Although the search was declared a recovery effort May 17, a police spokesperson said officers have no plans to abandon their efforts.

Police are still combing the river for any signs of the boy, the spokesperson said, and have no plans to stop until they are successful. The number of officers assigned to the case varies from day to day, the spokesperson noted, but efforts have been ongoing since Kennedy was first reported missing. More than 160 kilometres of the river have been searched.

At a press conference earlier this month, Insp. Jason Stonechild told reporters the search is a challenging one, as the river has limited visibility, a high current, and variable depths.
