Sewer upgrades help city prep for summer roadwork

Sewer lines on a busy stretch of road in the city are getting some updates this week, which is going to help smooth things out on the street a little later this year.

City Manager Diana Burton said crews are working on five different locations on Seventh Ave. W., digging up the road and spot-repairing the sewer.

“This is in anticipation of roadwork that will happen later in the summer,” she said. “There’s going to be repaving on the road. We wanted to make sure we had an understanding of the shape of the underground utilities.”

Several points on the avenue are slated for road repair. City engineers assessed the lines with a camera last fall and this spring. 

“If a certain block or road is flagged for asphalt work or road replacement, we’re making sure the [sewer] work gets done prior to the road being repaved,” Burton said. “We can’t always be 100 per cent successful with that, because sometimes the work is done and somebody’s service line gets a leak that we couldn’t have anticipated, but we’re trying to get better.”

This maintenance worked has caused some parts of the road to be closed, but the city worked closely with nearby residents and school division. Burton said the schools, especially Jonas Samson Junior High have been very understanding and accommodating.

“They know it is short term pain for long term gain,” Burton said. 

In the meantime, the city is asking residents to adhere to any road signs and barriers, since spring and summer is the busiest time of year with roadwork.
