A well-known community member and the only female mayor in Meadow Lake’s history has passed away.

According to J.E. Thomas Funeral Home, Florence ‘Flo’ Clark who was born Aug. 14, 1919 died a week ago on Friday, May 25.

Clark was a town councillor from January, 1970 until July, 1974. She sat in the mayor’s chair from July to October 1974 when the next election was held.

Current Mayor Gary Vidal said he as well as staff and council at City Hall were saddened by the news, as Clark and her family lived in the area for a number of years and impacted the community in a number of ways.

“We offer condolences to her whole family on the loss of their matriarch,” he said. “We wish them our best. With Mrs. Clark in particular, we want to appreciate and respect the service she provided to Meadow Lake back in the 1970s as both councillor and mayor for a time.”

He said the fact she was Meadow Lake’s first and only female mayor is special and says a lot about her leadership and contributions to the municipality.

“It speaks to the character and ability of this lady,” Vidal said. “Times are different now; we would love to have more female representation in our leadership, but for her to do that in the 1970s it speaks volumes.”
