RCMP hope for good turnout at town hall meeting

Jun 5, 2018 | 11:00 AM

The first of three town hall meetings aimed at opening dialogue between the RCMP and the public will be held tonight at the Alex Dillabough Centre at 7 p.m.

Battlefords RCMP Staff Sgt. Darcy Woolfitt said he hopes to see a good turnout at the event, which is designed at engaging the public around policing priorities and public safety.

“We would like to hear from the public to see what areas concern them,” Woolfitt said. “Having the public involved is pivotal to building stronger, safer communities.”

Woolfitt said the local crime rate and as well as historic and recent crime rates in the city will be discussed at the meeting.

Last week, RCMP Insp. John Sutherland gave the City of North Battleford the RCMP’s recent quarterly report, which showed overall crime numbers decreased in the during the first quarter of 2018 compared to numbers in 2017. Weapon-related crimes, break-and-enters, and impaired driving all decreased compared to the same period last year, as did robberies, assaults, and sexual assaults. Property crimes such as theft, mischief, and fraud all saw an overall increase, however, and drug-related crime also saw a slight increase.

The second and third scheduled meetings will be June 6 at the Denholm Community Hall and June 7 in Meota at the Community Centre.
