Food challenge receives boost following barbecue

Because hunger never takes a summer vacation, the Battlefords District & Food Resource Centre (BFRC) and Meadow Lake’s Doors of Hope Campaign are continuing their efforts to out-perform the Prince Albert Food Bank in a friendly competition to see which organization can raise the most food donations during the Every Plate Full awareness campaign currently running across Canada.

“We have great response so far,” Erin Katerynych executive director of the BFRC said. “Already we have raised over 3,000 pounds of food in the Battlefords and area so we are pretty pleased.”

A fundraising barbecue was held in the parking lot of Sobeys on Tuesday with hopes of raising food and monetary donations.

“We had a good crowd at the barbecue this year and we able to raise $720,” she added. “Plus we also received some non-perishable food items as donations as well.”

Katerynych added demand for their service increases every year and with summer fast approaching the donations are not as plentiful as people are on summer vacation so the shelves take a bit of a hit during those months.

She added the Food Bank will also accept hygienic products. Deodorant, soap and toothpaste are in high demand.

To make a donation,  visit the Meadow Lake Door of Hope office at 105 Second Ave. E in Meadow Lake or at the Battlefords District Food & Resource Centre on 1171 101 St. in North Battleford.
