A 19-year-old Prince Albert man was charged with assaulting a peace officer and animal cruelty after allegedly punching a police dog during his arrest.

A police spokesperson said officers were searching for a male suspect who was believed to be responsible for a series of arsons June 6 at 2 a.m. The suspect was located by Police Service Dog Daxa and her handler Const. Kelsey Bighetty, police said, but the suspect fled on a bicycle after spotting police.

Daxa and Bighetty caught up with the suspect on 13th St. E., police said, and Daxa engaged the suspect after he ignored orders to surrender. According to police, the suspect struck Daxa several times with a closed fist before he was subdued and handcuffed. Officers also found a knife nearby, which the suspect allegedly threw on the ground during the arrest.

The suspect, 19-year-old Jacob Little, was taken to hospital for injuries sustained during his altercation with the police dog, and was later released back into police custody. He was charged with assaulting a peace officer, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and cruelty to animals. He was scheduled to make his first appearance this morning in Prince Albert Provincial Court, and is presumed innocent at this stage.
