Law enforcement personnel run for Special Olympics

It was a perfect morning to go for a jog and to share the word about Special Olympics.

Members of the Prince Albert Police Service, RCMP, corrections personnel and conservation officers gathered outside City Hall Thursday morning for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run. The officers were joined by local Special Olympians for the annual event, which highlights the important cause and acknowledges the efforts of various schools that helped fundraise through hot dog sales.

“We go to 10 schools where all the students come out and run with the athletes,” event chair Stephen Hug told paNOW. “It gives everyone the satisfaction of having supported the Torch Run and getting to be part of this super day.”

The runners headed down Central Ave. towards Princess Margaret School, then were set to come through the downtown and on to schools on the south side of the city before heading out to Red Wing School and then wrapping up the afternoon on the West Flat.

“A lot of the schools have Special Olympic students so it’s good to see the money that we’re raising going back into the community, and for the rest of the students to see what it’s all about,” Hug said.

He said the Prince Albert community makes an extraordinary effort to raise funds each year through various events.

“Over the year we raise $40,000 that we give to Special Olympics Saskatchawen,” he said. “We are the top in the province and have been for years. Good on P.A.”

Editor’s note: this story was amended at 5:05 p.m. Thursday to reflect that conservation officers were also included in the Torch Run.
