Fire department rescues cat stuck on roof for two days

An odd call and a first for Prince Albert Fire Department Battalion Chief Alex Paul.

Sunday morning, the department received a call from a homeowner concerned about a cat that had been on their roof for approximately two days.

“Typically, a cat on a roof or in a tree will come down on its own and we don’t normally respond to them, but due to the length of time that this one had been up there, we attended and got the cat down,” Paul said, noting the owner wasn’t around and nobody knew who the owner was.

City bylaw officers were contacted and the cat was taken to the SPCA.

Paul said in his 23-year career, cats usually come down unassisted.

“Usually two or three times a year we will get people phoning, but typically we advise them to wait and let it come down on its own,” he said. “And if it remains up there for an extended period of time to phone us back, and we have never been phoned back.”

The cat appeared young, he said, and thought it may have jumped from a tree to the roof and couldn’t figure out how to get down.

Two garage fires under investigation

Earlier that morning, the department responded to two structure fires in the city’s west end.

At 6:10 a.m., crews responded to a fully engulfed garage of the 1500 block of 16 St. W. While returning to the station from that fire, teams were called to another garage fire nearby on the 1600 block of 15 Ave. W.

Firefighters made an aggressive attack on the flames to limit damage to the attached garage.

No injuries were reported and both remain under investigation.
