Local legion celebrates upgrades thanks to grants

The Meadow Lake Legion is looking more spruced up these days.

Thanks to a Canada 150 grant, the flooring, walk-in cooler and bar have been upgraded. Half of the nearly $60,000 project was funded by the federal grant.

“We’re celebrating the fact that we’re finished,”  Treasurer Dennis Baldinus said. “The counter, the sinks, the cooler, new flooring. At the end of it, it has been nearly a two-year project.”

It has been several years since upgrades of this nature have occured, he said, and they are important for the busy facility

“We did it before we started to run into any issues,” Baldinus said. “If the bar started to rot out with water damage, or the floor was starting to lift, it could cause some health risks. Without the grant, it would have just become more dilapidated over time. We’re making it a little more palatable for people to come in and enjoy the environment.

The local charity and veteran support group hold a number of events at the building during the year, including Kinsmen wing nights, karaoke fundraisers, and concerts.
