The Allen Sapp Gallery in North Battleford has a new exhibition focusing on the work of celebrated Red Pheasant First Nation artist Lionel Peyachew.

Leah Garven, curator and manager of galleries with the City of North Battleford, said Peyachew’s pieces are now on display at the gallery for the start of the exhibition.

Peyachew is an associate professor with the First Nations University of Canada and is based in Regina.

The show is part of a public art project called Roadside Attractions.

“We are a partner in a provincial-wide public art project organized by the Dunlop Art Gallery (in Regina),” Garven said, adding that there are 16 venues in Saskatchewan participating in the project to bring public art into the communities.

Garven said she chose Peyachew’s work for the North Battleford exhibition because of his great reputation as a sculptor in public art.

She added it was also an obvious connection to have Peyachew’s work displayed at the gallery with the art of the late Allen Sapp since both artists hail from Red Pheasant First Nation.

“I’m delighted Lionel wanted to come onto this project,” Garven said.

Peyachew’s six sculptures in the exhibit at The Allen Sapp Gallery are considered contemporary art works that are conceptual in design and “intriguing for the visitor.”

Many of Peyachew’s pieces reflect the challenges Indigenous people have endured in striving to hold onto their culture when faced with oppression.

Lionel Peyachew’s exhibition will run until January.
