Regina Catholic priest ponders future of church ahead of conclave

As the Catholic Church takes another step forward to selecting a new pope, the vicar general with the Archdiocese of Regina is encouraging local Catholics to pray for the cardinals and for the former pontiff.

Father Lorne Crozon admits its a period of change for the church, but one he feels is being adjusted to well.

“The church is trying to maintain its stability, trying to do the very best it can to move forward into what is kind of new territory for us,” he said on the eve of the conclave, “this has never happened, or it hasn’t happened in about 600 years.”

The cardinals will hold a conclave beginning Tuesday to select a pope to replace Benedict XVI, who chose to resign from the position rather than die serving it. Father Crozon said the church moving into an age where the pontiff is able to resign from his duties could change the mood of this conclave.

“I think they’re looking for somebody who is going to lead the church into this millennium we’re part of; the church is very different. The church is very different in western Europe, in North America, as it is in Africa and South America. So they need to find somebody who’s going to be a vibrant leader, who’s going to look to unify all those aspects and cultures within the church community.”

Father Crozon admits its encouraging to see Canadian Cardinal Mark Ouellet being discussed as a possible candidate. While he’s glad to see a Canadian seen fit to take on such a role, he feels Canadian Catholics are praying for the very best leader possible.

While there’s no formal gathering place for Catholics to meet following the news of a new pontiff, Father Crozon says he will be staying close to news sources for any kind of announcement.
