Saskatoon man off to Dragon’s Den to pitch melon bra idea

He calls himself the “melon man” and for good reason. Retired Saskatoon firefighter Ed Onishenko has invented the plastic melon bra for sports fans.

“I was at a Rider game and … I looked down in the stands and there’s a young lady wearing real, hollowed out watermelons and I thought to myself that’s a great idea. Why not plastic?”

Now, he not only has plastic melon bras in the Rider green colour, but also in every other CFL teams’ colours.

“Also, we have melon bras that look like basketballs, baseballs, soccer balls and wheels of a Nascar racing car,” he said, adding he will also soon have hockey-puck shaped plastic bras.

His main goal is to make people smile and have fun with his product.

“We need some laughter in life and this is part of it and a lot of people are enjoying it.”

The melon bras cost $10 each, with $1 of that going to breast cancer research in Saskatchewan.

Onishenko said he is excited to face the dragons of Dragon’s Den next week and the producer has promised to make his pitch fun.

“(The producer) is going to make the dragons wear them. That’s what he told me. So, I’m looking forward to that,” he laughed.

Onishenko faces the dragons on March 28 and the episode will air in the fall.

But, even after next week’s Dragon’s Den appearance, Onishenko doesn’t plan to slow down with his product.

“Once the Dragon’s Den is over, we plan to expand into the U.S. market as well as Europe.”
