As recycling rolls in, new company pops up to clean Regina’s bins

Would you pay someone to clean out the bin that holds all your garbage?

A new company, VIP Bin Cleaning, is betting that enough people in Regina are.

As of July, there certainly won’t be a shortage as the city sends roll out blue recycling bins to each household in the city.

“As Regina expands there are more and more homes coming up and more people coming to Regina. As that happens every homeowner is going to start to have a bin. Even outside of the city, Emerald Park, Balgonie, Pilot Butte, those places as well, there is also a need for this. Now as the recycling bins come in those’ll be added to the list,” co-owner Devon Young explained why he chose to start up one of the VIP Bin Cleaning franchises in Regina.

As pioneer of the franchise in Western Canada, Young notes how successful it has been elsewhere.

“It’s a lot bigger in the UK, it’s something we’re trying to get caught on here in Canada.”

The company touts itself as eco-friendly, particularly compared to other methods of cleaning out garbage bins.

“I’ll grab my power washer, throw a little bleach in there, a little Mr. Clean in there and I’ll just drain it,” Young explained how people often clean out their bins.

Instead, the service is trying to make the whole process a lot more green.

“We use a 100 per cent biodegradable phosphate free soap. At the end of the day it gets dumped into a sanitary dump station.”

In addition, after starting out the day with fresh water, the VIP trailer is designed to clean 150 different bins without needing fresh water.

That is because of a water filtering system within the trailer.

“It goes through a set of filters to get rid of the particles that are in the water, and it just continues to recycle over and over.”

He says most people don’t even think about cleaning their carts, but there are plenty of reasons to do so, especially with a warm summer of outdoor cooking ahead.

“The bins themselves, with the smell and the garbage inside, you do get wasps and you do get rodents.”

And if you think the City of Regina should be cleaning it for you, good luck. Their website clearly states that it’s up to residents to clean out their garbage and recycling bins.
