A Saskatoon-area man has been convicted of attempted murder in the stabbing of retired RCMP officer Robert Laidlaw.

Ryan Dalton Kelly Bear was found guilty in Saskatoon’s Court of Queen’s Bench Friday. His family members cried as they hugged Bear, who cheerfully told them it was going to be OK.

The decision came after a trial detailing how Bear stabbed Laidlaw just outside of Outlook last May. Bear stabbed Laidlaw twice in his vital organs. He was overheard telling Laidlaw he was going to slit his throat.

The pair encountered each other in the Rudy Landing development on May 23, 2012. Laidlaw saw Bear pulled over on the side of the road and stopped to see if he needed help, and became suspicious when Bear declined but mentioned that his tire might have been stolen.
