Prince Albert’s Donny Parenteau is joining the fight against bullying.

At a Saskatoon school on Tuesday, he introduced a new song and video called “Imagine a World.” Both are meant to bring attention to the issue.

“All we’re doing is trying to make people aware that this problem is still here and it’s not going to go away unless we put it in the forefront,” said Parenteau.

In order to bring his anti-bullying message to as many people as possible, Parenteau has posted the song on his website and it can be downloaded for free. “I’m giving away the song because to me that song is not written for me, that was written for the world,” he said.

The video, directed by Adam Kitter and produced by Saskatoon Media Group, is also available for public viewing on YouTube.

Parenteau first performed the song at the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards in Saskatoon last April.

During the writing process, he looked at the issue from the both sides. “I had to literally put myself in the shoes of the person being bullied – which was easy because I was bullied when I was a kid – to being the bully.”

He found inspiration in the story told by a young girl he met while making an appearance at a school who experienced serious physical bullying on her daily bus ride.

She never spoke up about the situation to anybody and the extent of the problem only came to light when her mother gave her a bath and noticed bruises on her body.

Talking about bullying can help is one of the themes in Parenteau’s new song. “What I try to do is let people know that you have to speak, you have to use your voice. Communication and bullying kind of go hand-in-hand,” he said.

The response to the new song and video has been overwhelmingly positive, said Parenteau, who urges everyone to download the song from his website and watch the video.
