Last minute New Year’s ideas around Prince Albert

Dec 31, 2013 | 5:35 AM

New Year’s Eve usually conjures up images of fireworks, sparkling wine, and a countdown.

But Prince Albert Brewing Company is adding a twist to that. Their New Year’s celebration is 80s themed.

It’s not a hard and fast dress code, just a way for people to have some fun if they feel like dressing up, said owner Dan Dobratz.

“We find if you over organize it doesn’t really turn out, so it’s more of a come as you are. But we have the theme of the 80s. And it usually fills up with a lot of good people wanting to have a good time,” he explained.

He added that there will be drink specials and a stockpile of balloons to drop at the stroke of midnight.

When it comes to club nights out, New Year’s Eve is no guarantee that it will be busy.

“It’s kind of hard to say because last year on New Years we were busy but I’m pretty sure New Years landed on a weekend last year and this year is on a Tuesday… it all depends on what the other bars are doing too,” Darci Stene, head waitress at JT’s.

To sweeten people up, they’re offering $2.50 draft and miscellaneous New Year’s shooters.

The Northern Lights Casino is banking on food, entertainment, and prizes to draw people out.

“Play the shot machines, the games, and you’re gonna be able to listen to the entertainment. If you so choose you can come out and have supper. You’re going to have a chance to win the most current iPads on the market. So it should be a great evening,” said Loren Sproat, marketing manager.

There aren’t just parties in the city. Small town shakers are also a big draw for people who were wandering the Gateway Mall before New Year’s Eve.

“We’re probably going to be home for New Year’s in Big River and we have ticket to a New Year’s party at the Community Centre, with the whole town,” Mila Pisz with a laugh.

Of course, not everyone is a party animal. Some like to stay in with a significant other or family on New Year`s Eve.

“We’ll be visiting family in Alberta,” said another man, who was at the mall with his daughter and significant other. “We’ll be staying in. It’s cold.”
