PA woman on police’s most wanted list turns herself in, faces 27 charges

A cycle of cocaine use, break and enters, arrests and failures to appear in court has ended for a Prince Albert woman.

Cobey Danielle Freed, 29, appeared in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Friday to face 27 charges. They included possession of cocaine, breaking and entering, public mischief, and failure to attend court. The Crown and Freed’s defense counsel, Dale Blenner-Hassett, came to a joint submission

Judge Vi Meekma accepted the request for six-months incarceration with no credit for time spent in remand. A handful of the charges were dropped by the Crown.

Defense counsel Belnner-Hasset started the appearance by addressing the 16 charges related to her skipping court.

“[Freed] was on the run so to speak, in that she fell out of the system,” Blenner-Hassett said.

He pointed out that Freed turned herself in willingly and said Freed indicated she wanted to take her plea and “wants to re-emerge… with a clean slate.”

The Crown was represented provincially by Elizabeth Addabor and federally by Scott Wolfe.

Charges racked up while evading court

They spent a significant period of time outlining the counts, which date back to May 2013. Freed stood listening attentively while in the prisoner’s box, dressed in an all grey sweat suit.

Freed had been on probation, and during a curfew check it was discovered that a residence didn’t exist at the address she provided.

Following that, Prince Albert police observed her driving and were already aware she didn’t have a valid driver’s licence. Officers also found three needles in the car that seemed to contain cocaine, which later tested positive as the drug. On top of that, she was once again breaking her mandated curfew.

That was the first of many times she was arrested that year.

Charges continued to rack up as she failed to attend court and was pulled over again that month while driving without a valid licence. Again, multiple needles were found in the car.

Also in that incident an officer found jewelry and coins in Freed’s purse.

The property was posted on the city police’s website so the owner could try to identify and recover it.

Months later, a man and his elderly mother came into the police station, properly identifying World War I coins and several rings with an estimated value of $10,000.

An October incident was caught on security camera at Warehouse One. According to an employee, Freed stole jewelry from the store but it was not recovered.

The final incident happened after Prince Albert police saw Freed in a vehicle heading out of the city. It was suspected she had used a vehicle to commit break and enters during weekdays, between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Police suspected the things stolen included tools, electronics and firearms, which were taken and sold in Prince Albert, according to Addabor.

Freed was finally stopped near Canadian Tire and arrested for possession of stolen property. Numerous tools were laid out on the back seat of the vehicle.

One of them had the owner’s name written on it. That individual confirmed a tool shed had been broken into.

Freed was released under conditions, including going through a 10-day detoxification. She failed to follow through on this.

Freed’s lawyer speaks on her behalf

Dale Blenner-Hassett spoke to the court after the charges were read out, addressing what he called “obviously a sad story. Many of us know her.”

He described the 29-year-old as a woman with a fairly troublesome childhood and got in with a bad crew.

He also spoke of Freed recently reuniting with her mother, which made Freed emotional. She started to cry in the prisoner’s box.

When discussing Freed’s charges, Blenner-Hassett said “I think her drug addiction is at the root of these problems.”

When Freed had an opportunity to speak, she said “I was on the run for a year… I kind of put my life on pause. I was with the wrong people and wrong relationship.”

Freed said she got on methadone and with the recent progress with her mother. “When I’m released, I have the support to stay clean.”
