Time to take on Toronto

Apr 15, 2014 | 10:39 AM

Four local Skills Canada competitors will be moving on to Nationals in Toronto.

The provincial competition for Skills Canada was held in Prince Albert on April 10 and 11 at various locations around the city.

The event gave high school and SIAST students a chance to show off their talents in different areas.

Students who placed gold will get to go on to the next level, Nationals, June 4 to 7 in Toronto.

Winners from Carlton Comprehensive High School include Sara Grassick (Gold in Public Speaking), Blayz Verge (Gold in Precision in Machining), Quinten Saunders (Gold in Electrical Wiring), and Damien Gibb (Gold in Auto Service).

Grassick said she competed against eight other participants in prepared speech. They had two topics to speak on and then were questioned on them, which she said she really enjoyed.

“I wrote my speech and I practised it a million times,” she said. “I had it memorized and so the day went really well.”
She’s looking forward to going to Toronto to compete this summer.

“I think it’s going to be super exciting. There’s definitely going to be a different competition, people that are from all different provinces, so I think it’s going to be different, and great,” she said.

For Verge, competing in provincials was a great experience.

“It was awesome, I had a blast, and I’d love to do it again in Toronto so I look forward to it,” said Verge.

He had been taking machining classes all through-out school and excelling at it, when his teacher, Trevor Rutz, suggested he join Skills Canada.

During the competition he was given a blueprint of a test-shaft and had to follow all dimensions and safety instructions to complete it.

After winning, he will now continue training for Nationals.

“I like a challenge and it’s definitely going to be a challenge,” said Verge. “I’d love to do great and win and everything, but I’m going for the experience, it’s going to be fun.”

He said he’s been training with Rutz for two hours a day in preparation, figuring out how to finish the project most efficiently in the seven hours given.

Verge has already been accepted to the Machining course at the SIAST Kelsey campus in Saskatoon. He plans on becoming a journeyperson within the next four years and pursuing it as a career after that.

Rutz stressed how important it is for students to get the chance to participate in the competition as it offers numerous future opportunities.

“It allows them to excel at a higher level, doing something that they love and it really opens a lot of doors to them for employers looking for possible employees,” said Rutz.

Hosting the competition in Prince Albert was a big task. Rutz said he’s grateful to the school division and staff of Carlton for making it possible, along with Brick Layers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1 for offering training in their trade.

He said it meant a lot that they could host the event here in the city.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity. It was great to have all these competitors come to our school to compete at the level that they practised so hard to get to, and it was great to see the public and other students, they were able to observe and check out the different competitions that were happening,” said Rutz.

Rutz said he’s proud of all their students and is looking forward to travelling with them to Toronto.
