Saskatchewan’s youngest mayor might become one of the province’s youngest candidates for the Cumberland constituency in the 2015-2016 election.

Thomas Sierzycki, the 26-year-old mayor of La Ronge, announced Monday he will seek the nomination for the Saskatchewan Party.

“As a municipal official, I felt it was imperative in the ongoing discussions we’ve had, both for the municipality, for health (and) for the different things we’re involved in that we need someone at the table in government,” said Sierzycki.

As an MLA, you represent a greater area, but you’re part of the decision making and policy planning for the province, he said.

“The step-by-step process really came down to how we are as Northern Saskatchewan going to move our agenda most effectively … combined with the vision of the province,” Sierzycki explained.

Sierzycki said he will continue to sit as mayor until a nomination meeting happens. His priority as mayor is to continue serving the residents of La Ronge, he said.
“If the nomination meeting is successful, I’ll continue to serve as mayor until the election is called. At that time I’ll be taking a leave of absence, and the rest will be up to the hands of the constituents that are voting,” said Sierzycki.

A general meeting for what the candidates for the Cumberland nomination need to do to start the process takes place at the La Ronge Legion. The next meeting following that will be a nomination meeting, where people from the Saskatchewan Party vote for candidates.

“If we get that, then it’s off to the races, building the team and making sure that the messaging and some of our ideas are spread forwards,” said Sierzycki.

Sierzycki was first elected as mayor in 2009 and re-elected in 2012. He received the 2012 Queen’s jubilee medal for Youth Achievement and was profiled by Maclean’s Magazine for their “Top 11 Young Canadians to Watch” in 2011.

Cumberland is currently represented by the NDP’s Doyle Vermette.
