Rosthern’s Robyn Regehr gets special Stanley Cup honour

A 15-year veteran NHL player from Rosthern has finally won the Stanley Cup.

After being sidelined in the playoffs with a knee injury, Robyn Regehr was not on the ice when Los Angeles Kings’ Alec Martinez scored in double overtime. Yet Regehr was honoured to be the second player to hoist the Stanley Cup when captain Dustin Brown passed it to him after the game.

Edith and Ron Regehr, Robyn’s parents, were in the stands at the Staples Center when Brown made the decision. Edith said they were proud and excited.

“I have never seen such a big smile on Robyn’s face. He was so happy,” Edith recalled. The Regehrs have always been huge hockey fans and Edith said seeing Robyn carry the cup was a moment she’d waited her whole life for.

“It was pretty exciting. The crowd in L.A. is always pretty exciting too,” she said. The tense fans stood for the end of regulation play and for both overtimes.

Regehr came short of winning the cup with the Calgary Flames 10 years ago under coach Darryl Sutter. While Regehr became healthy enough to play in Game 5, Sutter made the hard decision to keep the winning lineup the same.

Edith said that didn’t matter and players such as Martinez even thanked the Regehrs for the impact Robyn had on their careers.

“You could tell he was right in it. It didn’t bother him at all. He hid it very well. I’m sure it bothered him to not play but like those guys said, he did what he was asked to do. He was like an assistant coach,” she said.

The Stanley Cup made a visit to Robyn’s home Sunday where his sons Wyatt and Shane sat with their arms around the cup while watching TV, Edith said laughing. When Robyn gets a day with the Stanley Cup, he will be bringing it home to Rosthern to visit the minor hockey league team there. She expects it will also make a stop in Calgary.

Robyn has one more year in his contract with the Kings before likely retiring. He and his wife Kristina, who grew up in Gronlid, will spend the off season at their cabin at Christopher Lake.
