Craven campers not fazed by mud or mosquitoes

The unofficial kickoff to the Craven Country Jamboree began on Thursday night, but the music on the main stage will start on Friday.

Campground conditions were a mixed bag earlier in the day. A water truck was running down Main Street, working to keep the dust down while another truck was getting pulled out of a very muddy low spot just a couple hundred metres away.

“Once you get down to general admission it’s pretty muddy,” said Jessica Rose, who was setting up for the weekend. “Looks like there’s people stuck down there already.”

“[After] you pull in [to the sites] you kind of sink in the mud,” added another camper. “We were stuck when we got here.”

Kyle set up on Wednesday, but not much is going to bother him.

“Little dust, little muddy, little wet, but whatever – that doesn’t matter,” he said.

There are also some unwelcome visitors to the site – mosquitoes. But most said they’re not going to ruin the party of the summer.

“After a while we won’t notice them anyways,” added Jessica Rose.

Others like Brad opt for the catchall solution to all problems at Craven.

“Drink more beer.”

Meanwhile, organizers said everything was going according to plan.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Geoff Buxcey said they have had very few issues so far.

“We have one person in custody for being drunk and disorderly that was it,” he said.
“It was enough that he went to the drunk tank.”

There are about 50 officers assigned to Craven this year, not including the traffic services.

The main stage entertainment kicks on Friday with headliner Luke Bryan.
