The doors to Meadow Lake’s first chain restaurant and bar combination opened its doors earlier this week and so far the community’s been embracing it.

Boston Pizza opened on Monday, Jan. 2, making it the first chain restaurant without a ‘fast food’ tag in Meadow Lake.

Chamber of Commerce President Wayne Marsh said the restaurant is a positive thing to see. He added it shows other potential business owners that there is opportunity in Meadow Lake.

“It definitely brings more interest, it shows the city is growing and it’s not a dead economy,” he said.

Being a new business and talked about for at least three years in the city, Marsh said the existing restaurants may see a slump in its own business but added it shouldn’t overly affect anything.

“Some weekends you’ll find everywhere is busy so it might help those people looking for a place to eat,” he said. “It might cause a slump for a little bit, but people are fairly good at shopping around, or are very loyal to the places they go to.”

He added if anything, the Boston Pizza will help raise the level of customer service in the city.

“There’s places which give good customer service and people go back for that service. Sometimes [a new business] gives that extra boost in service in the restaurant industry,” he said.

The Boston Pizza, owned by Canalta Foods, is the second of a three part plan by the company. The first part saw Tim Horton’s constructed nearly two years ago, the second is the Boston Pizza, while the third is a Canalta Hotel on the same property as the Tim Horton’s and Boston Pizza.

At this time, a construction date has not been released on the hotel.
