Northern Pikes and Grapes of Wrath to perform at E.A. Rawlinson Centre

A Saskatchewan band that’s been together for three decades is making a stop in Prince Albert.

The Northern Pikes, from Saskatoon, will perform alongside The Grapes of Wrath at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre on Jan 27.

Bryan Potvin, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter with the Northern Pikes, said the band has been playing together for 33 years.

“We’ve played everywhere in Canada at one time or another,” he said.

The group, Potvin said, was formed following the death of Neil Morgan of The Idols in the early 1980’s.

“Neil passed away sadly in late 1983 and it just seemed inevitable that The Idols would eventually reform after a bit of a hiatus and probably rebrand, rename, and that’s what happened,” Potvin said.

Potvin said he and his friend Jay Semko started the new group, the Northern Pikes, with the other two members of The Idols joining them.

The band, Potvin said, signed a record deal with Virgin in 1987.

“We released several albums with them, and we’ve made about five more since then,” Potvin said. “We’ve had lots of hits on the radio over the years. It’s been a great ride, and we’re having as much fun now as we have at any point in our career.”

He said if you listen to the radio in Canada then you’ve heard one of their songs.

“You’ll hear those [performed Jan. 27] and some other fun things, we’re going to cover material from across all of our studio records,” he continued.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
