Stepping up to support Multiple Sclerosis

Community members from the Battlefords put the best step forward for a very worthy cause.

Dozens of people participated yesterday afternoon in the annual M.S. Walk to help raise funds for research and treatment.

M.S. is an autoimmune disease that attacks myelin; the protective cover around an individual’s nerves necessary for the transmission of neural impulses throughout the body. Damage to myelin causes symptoms such as weakness, fatigue and cognitive impairment.

Rhonda Head is an ambassador for the M.S. Society, and participated in the walk with a team called Myrna’s M.S. Money Makers.

“My mom has M.S., so that’s basically why I got involved with [the walk] when I did,” she said. “I started off when I was 19, and got involved because of her, and now here I am still going and trying to find a cure.”

“I’m hoping that [the participants] will be able to add towards [the cure] today,” Head added.

Head has participated in 19 walks, and has also used her charity Gamers Giving Back to help raise funds for the walk. The virtual fundraiser called Guild Wars 1, and Guild Wars 2, and Head was able to raise over $2,500 this year by hosting in-game toga parties.

“This is the eighth year [Gamers Giving Back] has had the virtual toga party, so it was a lot of fun,” Head said. “[There was] a lot of support from everybody all over the world; not just in Canada.”
