The inclement weather did not hamper the spirits of the 208 golfers who took in the annual Wayne Pruden Memorial Golf Tournament at the North Battleford Golf and Country Club on Monday.

The sold out event, now in its 21st year, saw golfers from as far away as Alberta and Winnipeg hit the links to raise money for the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation (BUH). The event is named after Pruden to recognize the ongoing efforts he made throughout his life to make the community a better place.

This year all funds will go toward the purchase of a dental X-ray machine for the operating room.

“I was on the course today along with the golfers and the volunteers and we certainly had some rain,” Claudette McGuire, Executive Director of the BUH Foundation said after the tournament. “But you know it’s ‘the Pruden’ — these golfers and volunteers will golf through anything. They even played in the snow one year.

“It gives you a warm feeling when you see your community come together and support events like this.”

Along with the prizes for lowest score, longest drive and closest to the hole competition another honour was bestowed at the event.

Long-time Pruden family friend and community volunteer Patti Lumsdon was awarded the Spirit of Giving Award by Wayne Pruden’s daughter Jose.

“I can’t think of anyone better to receive the Spirit of Giving Award than Patti,” an emotional Josee Pruden told the capacity crowd at the awards banquet. “She is always behind the scene, quietly going about her work. She is truly someone you can always count on and I know because I have counted on her all my life.”

Lumsdon said she was thankful for the award.

“I’m extremely honoured for this recognition,” Lumsdon said following a standing ovation. “My friendship with the family began with Wayne first then his wife and I became great friends. It’s wonderful.”

She said she was in awe of how the Wayne Pruden Memorial Golf Tournament has grown since its inception.

“My husband Terry and I talk about it quite frequently how delighted Wayne would be with the tournament,” she added. “When it first started we thought he would be over the moon seeing his name in print all over town.”

Organizers announced that the 22nd Annual Wayne Pruden Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Monday June 4, 2018.
