Little Red River family credits culture camp for helping daughter with cancer
A Little Red River family is crediting a culture camp for helping their daughter as she heals from cancer.
At just three and a half years old, Kaylen Sasakamoose was diagnosed with leukemia. She began chemo treatment in Saskatoon, with her mother, father and two older sisters by her side.
But only months after being diagnosed, Sasakamoose got the chicken pox, making it extremely difficult for her immune system to fight off cancer at the same time. Doctors gave her eight different types of medications, but her body began to shut down and she went into an induced coma for a month.
Freida Halkett said witnessing her daughter not being able to wake up was very tough, especially because she almost lost one of her other daughters two months after birth.
