For the second time in less than a year, a recreation facility in Wilkie will attempt to garner the national spotlight.

A group of local residents are hoping to garner enough nominations to be selected to win the TSN Kraft Heinz Project Play competition and a chance to win $250,000 in recreational facility upgrades. In March, the community was one of the top 10 communities in the Kraft Hockeyville competition and won $25,000 for arena upgrades at the SaskCan Community Centre.

“We’ve chosen the community swimming pool to be the benefactor because it needs upgrading,” Helen Urlacher of the bid committee said. “It’s a great facility as is but we know it can be better.”

The Wilkie swimming pool was built in 1949 at a price tag of $5,000.

“There has been talk of enclosing the pool so we can have a year-round facility which will create jobs and revenue for the town,” Urlacher added. “Winning the Project Play contest will certainly go a long way to helping us realize that goal.”

The deadline to file nominations for the Wilkie swimming pool is Aug. 18, then according to Urlacher it will be “wait and see”.

“We are trying to rally the community together with as many nominations as possible,” Urlacher said.  “We did it in March and became a finalist in Hockeyville and I know we can do it again this time.”

The top four communities will be announced on TSN on September 4.  The winning community will win $250,000 while the runners-up will each receive $20,000.

Over the past eight years the Kraft Heinz Project Play competition has awarded $2.2 million to 68 communities across Canada.
