Blueberry fever hits St. Walburg this weekend

The St. Walburg Wild Blueberry Festival, a unique event to the area, is back.

This year marks the 29th annual celebration and will kick off tonight. Organizer Amber Gervais said they are expecting huge crowds.

“We are expecting between 3,000 to 6,000 people to attend the event,” Gervais said. “There will be something for everyone of all ages to enjoy.”

The festival begins tonight with the annual Ethic Supper and Old Time Dance at the St. Walburg Parish Hall and continues throughout the day on Saturday.

“All of the events will be held outside on the downtown streets of St. Walburg beginning at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning,” Gervais added. “There will be vendors set up with arts and crafts, home-based business items and of course lots of blueberry treats while supplies last.”

Other highlights include the annual Art Show and Sale at the Chuckwagon Museum plus blacksmithing demonstrations, the classic car show and shine and wraps up with a beer garden at the St. Walburg Liquor Store.

Even though the population of less than 700 will multiply five-fold on Saturday, Gervais said there will be plenty of parking for everyone.

“We will have the area well marked off for parking,” she said “Visitors can park in the school parking lot or on one of the town streets that is not involved in the festival.”

Gervais also advised festival-goers to leave pets at home as temperatures are expected to be close to 30 Celsius Saturday and organizers are concerned about their safety as well.
