Battleford post office re-opening delayed

The re-opening of the old post office in Battleford has been delayed for several weeks while Canada Post continues with its interior design plans.

The century-old building, located at the corner of 22 St. W. and 2 Ave. W., was initially expected to open by Nov. 1, but that date could be closer to Chistmas now.

“[Canada Post] are in the design phase, and just wrapping up the few changes they had to make,” said Cassandra Germsheid, who purchased the building with her husband Jesse Crozier in the spring. “They are hopefully wrapping that up very soon. Right now, we’re just waiting for them to finalize their designs. They have been aware of everything that is going on, but have been very busy…. They do know that everyone is anxious for this to happen.”

Canada Post plans to make some changes to the interior flooring. Workers were in the building recently to take measurements of the space where the post office service will be located.

“I think they want to make it more uniform with the updated post offices across Canada,” Germsheid said. “But they have to customize it to this building, and ensure they have enough [postal] boxes too.”

“They are updating the customer service area and changing it a bit to accommodate a growing population,” she added. “They want to make sure they get it right. I’m sure they are just about at the end of that stage. We’ll find out from them soon what their plan is, and hopefully some date.”

Germsheid said she hopes the building will be open before Christmas.

“If in the next week or so they [Canada Post] come to some decision and we can get going quickly on it, I think that [date] is doable,” she said.

The couple spent the summer renovating the four-storey building.

One of the more involved projects they had to look after was ensuring the heating system was properly installed, as well as completing upgrade work on the exterior brickwork of the building using dry ice technology

The couple have also been working on the repairs to the clock in the tower.

“It works; it’s in running condition,” Germsheid said, adding an expert will be coming soon to ensure everything is in order so there won’t be any extra wear and tear on the clock gears.
