An interview with Kevin Smith before ‘An Evening with Kevin Smith’

Kevin Smith, one of the pioneers in filmmaking will be making his way to the Gold Eagle Casino on Friday for An Evening with Kevin Smith.

He’s a filmmaker, actor, comedian, comic book writer, author and podcaster. He came to prominence with the low-budget comedy film Clerks, which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in a very well known film, as the character Silent Bob of stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob.

battlefordsNOW was able to speak to Smith prior to his event at the Gold Eagle Casino, and here are some of the best sound bytes from that interview.

What should people expect at the event?

“We usually go about two hours, it’s just chit chat. We chit chat about whatever the audience really wants to talk about. They tend to ask questions about my career, the movie biz, or comic books. I’m a podcaster, so there’s a lot about that as well. It’s very informal, definitely a good time. I’ve been doing it for a long time, I’ve been in the business for 25 years, and I’ve been doing An Evening with Kevin Smith for 20 of those 25 years. The good news is it doesn’t ask me to do anything more than be myself, and I’m well practised at that at age 48. If you’re remotely into the nonsense of the guy who played Silent Bob, this is the night for you. I know the irony, it’s like ‘Wait, Silent Bob and you’re going to talk all night?’ Yeah, man. That was a total acting performance. It’s hard for me not to speak, as you can tell.”

You seem to have a love for Canada, can you speak on that?

“A deep abiding love. It began when I was a child. I grew up in New Jersey and my parents took us to Niagara Falls once. That was where they spent their honeymoon. My parents said ‘Get in the car, we’re going to another country.’ My concept of other countries were across the ocean, so I thought we were going to Chiddy Chiddy Bang Bang it to someplace, but we just drove North for a long time. Suddenly, we were in Canada, and I fell in love because it was like a movie set. They didn’t have the same brand names that we had in America. But everything looked the same, like the stores and the culture was recognizable, but everything seemed like a make pretend version of where we came from. Even the cops, they didn’t wear blue, they wore red. They weren’t in cars, they were on horses.”

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot:

“(The original) was made 18 years ago. [In those 18 years] I like to think I’ve grown as a storyteller and a screenwriter. This movie is completely different. In Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Jay and Silent Bob find out Hollywood’s making a reboot of that old movie about them. So they travel across the country to stop it, again. It’s the same movie all over again. It’s a movie that makes fun of sequels, and remakes and reboots, while being all three at the same time.”
