NAR celebrates 10th anniversary with birthday bash

It was a night to remember Feb. 1 for the volunteers of Northern Animal Rescue (NAR) who held a special event to celebrate 10 years.

The birthday bash was held at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre and featured a poutine bar from Cravings Late Night Food, photography and entertainment by Michelle Hopper, and an appearance by Princess Elsa from the movie Frozen. In total, NAR chairperson Genevieve Candelora stated more than 100 people attended the celebration, noting it was held in a come-and-go style.

“We’re feeling really positive right now,” she said. “We feel proud of the work we’ve been doing and we’re just looking forward to the future.”

In the last 12 months, Candelora added NAR has grown considerably through partnerships with La Ronge, Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. In particular, NAR was able to secure an animal control contract with La Ronge council last year, which has given them access to a facility and an employee. The rescue group was also able to acquire a van to transport animals courtesy to a sizeable donation from a local business in 2018.

In the years to come, Candelora expects NAR will continue to expand. She said NAR recently launched a new website and will continue to look for ways to engage the tri-communities.

“The dedicated board members we have are committed and have really been able to make some positive strides in our organization,” Candelora said. “We’re appreciative of all the support we’ve been receiving and we’re just excited to be able to celebrate this milestone.”
