Learning more about Melfort’s curling history

The Melfort and District Museum is hosting a Coffee and Conversation event at the Melfort Curling Rink on Thursday, Feb. 7, featuring a chance to hear and share stories about the history of curling in the community.

Curator Gail Marie Anderson told northeastNOW museum staff members are excited about the event.

“There is a long history of curling in this town, as you know, and we want people to come and hear all about it and share their stories,” said Anderson.

The stories won’t be the only draw to the event.

Anderson said a number of pictures and historical items will also be featured.

“We even have the first granite rocks that came to Melfort from M.H. Clift back in the early 1900s,” she said.

Among the pictures will be snapshots of school teams throughout the years, and Anderson said it has been a proud tradition in Melfort of parents teaching the sport to their children.

“It used to be outdoor curling rinks and of course the other ones were built as they came along,” Anderson said. “The curling rink that we’re going to be in on Thursday was built in 1974. There was an official opening with (former Prime Minister) Diefenbaker there.”

The Coffee and Conversation event will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and is part of Archives Week in the province.
