Hudson Bay to host provincial snowmobile festival

The countdown is on before the groomed snowmobiling trails in the Hudson Bay area can be showcased.

Around 300 riders are expected to be in the area for the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association’s snowmobile festival on Feb. 22 and 23.

This year’s theme is ‘take a ride on the wildside’ which ties in with Hudson Bay’s close proximity to Wild Cat Hill provincial wilderness park north of town.

Town Administrator Rick Doleszar said the event will mean a “tremendous economic boost” for the area.

“The spin off of the snowmobile trails and our establishment as a destination point, the impact is into the millions of dollars in terms of the revenue that comes into town,” Doleszar said.

Riders have a reason to look forward to the festival; for the last 10 years Snow Riders West Magazine readers voted it as Saskatchewan’s number one destination for groomed trail riding.

Registration for the festival is filling up fast with well over 200 already pre-registered to take part in the provincial weekend-long event.

Things get kicked off on Friday with an evening lunch and live entertainment followed by a pancake breakfast and a full day of guided trail rides on Saturday. Participants can choose from 75-mile and 120-mile tours.

A banquet and awards presentation is scheduled for Saturday evening at Brooks Hall with live music by Iron Orr to cap the night.

Two new snowmobiles will be given away by the Hudson Bay Trail Riders and the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association.

“We have over 670 kilometers of groomed trail here which is mainly in provincial forest and it is really a beautiful place,” Doleszar said.
