Who has the coldest rink in Saskatchewan?
That’s a question being posed to Twitter users by battlefordsNOW reporter Brady Lang.
After many nominations and votes over the past few days, the town of Annaheim’s rink is in the top eight.
Recreation Board President Jody Vedress said it would be neat to get the bragging rights.
“We’ve always been told the rink is probably the coldest in Saskatchewan,” Vedress said. “Some of the other rinks are quite cold too but I think bar none and when you really crunch it down Annaheim probably is one of the coldest rinks I would think.”
Vedress referred to the steel structure of the rink where most others are wooden.
“Basically the steel gets cold so it actually potentially makes it even colder in the rink just about than outside,” Vedress said.
The cold conditions limit the use of the rink that is mainly used for public skating and their recreational hockey team, especially during the recent cold snap.
“Back in the day when we did have minor hockey and senior hockey we definitely used the cold to our advantage,” Vedress said. “You’d get towns that came from playing in a warmer rink to playing in our rink, it usually didn’t benefit them very well.”
Vedress said that the rec board committee had discussions on making upgrades such as adding insulation but have never put anything into motion because of costs. The board tends to put its focus on maintaining the community hall instead of the rink.
The top eight in the opinion poll also includes Regina’s Balfour Arena, Edam, Lafleche, Ituna, Star City, Bellegarde and Montmarte as well as Annaheim.
The top four will be announced Feb. 15 at noon on Brady Lang’s Twitter page where voting will be open once again.
