Nipawin council received a response over potential safety concerns with an intersection close to the town.

Safety concerns over the Highway 35/Bunge Canada entrance intersection initially came up at a North East Area Transportation committee meeting. Conversations about safety issues and the need for new roads in the area encouraged Mayor Rennie Harper to write a letter to the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure.

Lori Carr, minister of highways and infrastructure, wrote a response to Harper and the Town of Nipawin on Jan. 23, which was made public during the Feb. 11 council meeting.

“I would like to assure you that the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure (MHI), takes safety very seriously. MHI is currently working with Bunge Canada and Pineland Co-op to address impacts of their developments. As part of MHI’s process of evaluating safety concerns, MHI has reviewed current posted speed limits, geometry of the intersection, the existing flared intersection treatments in both directions, sight distances and collision history in the vicinity of the intersection,” said Carr.

Carr’s letter stated the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure is working with Pineland Co-op on a Traffic Impact Assessment, as it intends on relocating some of its facilities across from Bunge Canada. Bunge Canada did not wish to participate in the assessment.

Harper told northeastNOW her initial reaction to the letter is that she’s happy the ministry is doing a study, although now is the time to wait.

“We will take that to our next North East Area Transportation Committee,” Harper said. “I think we’ve done due diligence and I think we’ll wait and see what study they’ll perform. I think we need to wait for them to do that and what the outcome of that is before we make any further movement towards that.”

Carr’s letter also stated the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure would receive Pineland Co-op’s Traffic Impact Statement in early January 2019.
