P.A. set to get memorial for impaired driving victims

Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s Prince Albert chapter wants the city to have a place where people can remember those who lives have been altered by impaired driving.

“It’s something we’ve been talking about for the last few years,” Trina Cockle, the current president of P.A.’s MADD chapter said.

Currently MADD Canada is getting ready to unveil a monument in Saskatoon, which will honour victims of impaired driving from all over the province. The P.A. chapter secured national funding to install a memorial bench in town.

“Ours is just going to be an in general memorial bench, for anyone whose life has been affected by impaired driving,” Cockle said. “We’re hoping for a location down near the Elks Hall.”

Cockle said having the bench in a public place is also nice for people who have lost loved ones to impaired driving as for many going to a cemetery is painful experience.

Along with being more accessible, Cockle said supporters of the bench say it will help others think about the issue when they see it.

Installing the memorial bench is also part of MADD Prince Albert’s evolving mission as the group is wants to do more work when it comes to supporting victims of impaired driving. The local group has been working to provide support by holding healing circles and members from the group have gone through training so they can provide more support to victims.

“That’s why this monument in Saskatoon is so important to us, the memorial bench in our city is very important to us,” Cockle said.
