Nord heading down south to hit the water at Orlando School

Orcas standout Brandon Nord will swim in a warmer climate soon.

The 17-year-old recently committed to Rollins College in Orlando, Florida on a four-year scholarship to the division two school, where he plans to major in biology and minor in geology. The student, originally from Meadow Lake, said he’s excited to head South.

“It’s a really good experience for me, it’s totally new,” he said. “It’s the states, we’re the same, but were also different too. It’s a new chance for me to grow as a new person with a totally new club.”

Nord has been swimming competitively for nine years, and received many accolades throughout. He said he is thankful for his time with the Orcas.

“I didn’t like pushing myself (before the Orcas), even the first year, I was still iffy about it,” he said. “With the people that were here, and the coaches that were here, it’s really helped me to love the sport even more and continue on into the future.”

Coach John Mcleod, now six months into his tenure with the Orcas, said he pushed Nord to reach his full potential.

“I have been trying to put him into tough positions where he feels uncomfortable and he’s really adapted well,” he said. “We train the same way up here, which may give him a big mental boost going down there.”

“I’m sure he’s really nervous (to go down there), but I’m sure he’s very excited about (the move down south),” he said.
