‘He was the king of visiting’: Brother of homicide victim

Family and friends are mourning the death of Albert Gunville following his tragic death earlier this week.

Gunville, 50, has been identified by family and police as the man killed earlier this week following an incident at a West Flat home. Police say the incident happened in the 1200 block of 17^th Street West Wednesday evening.

Emile Gunville said his older brother Albert was a hard-working father who enjoyed visiting and socializing, and made time for others. Albert grew up as one of nine siblings in the small community of Adanac, near Unity.

“He was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back and he loved people deeply,” Emile Gunville told paNOW. “As a brother, he was someone you could call on when you needed to; he’d be there in a hearbeat.”

The Gunville family was busy making funeral arrangements Friday. Albert worked doing maintenance in the community, Emile Gunville said.

“It is really tough,” Emile added. “Losing Albert leaves a really, really big void. It’s very painful.”

Brad McKenzie lived next door to Albert, and said they would often visit over a cup of coffee. He described Gunville as a caring and friendly man and offered condolences to his family.

“He was a very nice friend, he would be telling jokes and laughing, and very friendly,” McKenzie said. “We would talk about life. We had a lot in common and he had a great sense of humour.”

Relatives of Gunville were in court Friday morning for the first appearance of the woman charged in connection with his death. Judith Sasakamoose, 36, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with Gunville’s death.

“We’ll just trust that the court will do what they need to do moving forward,” Emile said.

Gunville’s death marks Prince Albert’s second homicide of 2019.
