Melfort Stabbing Case

Judge grants bail for Melfort man charged with attempted murder

A Melfort man facing 10 charges related to a stabbing in January – which includes attempted murder, assault, break and enter, and possession of weapon – has been granted bail.

Twenty-two-year-old Tristan Lundgren was charged after a stabbing at a Melfort home early on Jan. 26. During the incident, a man was stabbed multiple times in the back and a woman was assaulted. Lundgren was at large but then arrested in Fort Qu’appelle the following day.

Judge Lloyd Stang released Lundgren on bail under conditions including:

  • being under electronic monitoring
  • staying inside his mother’s residence in Prince Albert 24/7 unless given permission
  • not being within 50 km of Melfort
  • no contact with the victim or suspects
  • no possession of a knife outside of his mother’s residence, except at work when it’s necessary

After receiving submissions from the Crown and defence, Stang determined Lundgren can keep peace and follow the court order under supervision, noting that he has a shorter criminal record with no violent offences and no history of breaching probation.

Stang told Lundgren it was a close call due to the seriousness of the charges and mentioned one misstep would make it difficult for him to be granted bail again.

Candace Bodnar, a lawyer for Legal Aid Saskatchewan, said she’s prepared to stay on record as the defence lawyer for the case, even if Lundgren finds employment and may not need Legal Aid in the future.

The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, March 26 at 9:30 a.m. in Melfort Provincial Court for defence election.
